As a self-implemented program, each district works at their own pace initiating the Schools for Energy Efficiency® systemized plan of operational and behavioral energy efficient strategies. Success depends on participation of the districts and cooperation at each school. The SEE Program goal is to reduce energy use district-wide and in the long-term achieve ENERGY STAR® status.
Since the program was introduced in 2002, participating school districts have saved an average of 13% on their total annual energy use with some districts reaching over 30%. This equates to over $22,000,000 in avoided energy costs. In addition, SEE school districts have received national recognition through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program for individual building and district-wide energy saving accomplishments.
SEE participating school districts are leaders in the nation with K-12 ENERGY STAR awards -

The overall environmental impact based on the reduction of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions of the SEE program is equivalent to the annual emissions of 21,554 passenger vehicles or the electricity use of 16,323 homes.
SEE is active in Minnesota, Louisiana, New Jersey, and soon Iowa school districts - that’s nearly 600 school buildings working towards efficient facility operation. Together, our SEE district’s spend millions of dollars annually on energy with a conservative goal of 10% reduction in energy use or costs through their energy efficiency efforts each year. Schools are discovering that the minute you start talking about saving energy, staff and students take notice to their energy waste and decide to make a difference by changing their habits!
